The Turn lab promotes the following values in how we conduct research, work with one another, mentor trainees, and engage with the broader community.
Philosophy
We treat every person with dignity, compassion, and respect. All voices are welcome, and we have zero tolerance for bullying or harassment. Our lab is a safe, inclusive place to learn, grow, collaborate, and do excellent science, regardless of background or identity.
We communicate honestly, respectfully, and often. Clear expectations, constructive feedback, and two-way conversations help us succeed. Lab members are expected to be open about their work and needs; in return, I will communicate expectations, decisions, and feedback clearly. None of us are mind readers, so let’s keep the conversation going.
We succeed together. We support one another’s learning, well-being, and professional growth rather than fostering competition or comparison. We value the different experiences, perspectives, and strengths each person brings, and we are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
We pursue careful, transparent, and reproducible science. We critically examine our assumptions and biases, document our work thoroughly, and communicate findings honestly (even when results are unexpected or inconclusive). As members of the scientific community, we share a responsibility to contribute reliable knowledge in the pursuit of truth.
We take responsibility for our commitments, conduct, and scientific record. We acknowledge mistakes, address problems promptly and respectfully, give appropriate credit for contributions, and work to repair harm when it occurs. It is a privilege to be a scientist in academia, as our work is funded by tax payer money, trust of great scientists, support of our families and friends, with the hopes that our work can help better understanding and humanity. Therefore, it is our responsibility to be good stewards of our time and resources in appreciation for this great opportunity we have been given.
Research is challenging, uncertain, and often slow. We meet setbacks with patience, resilience, and support for one another. We encourage each lab member to set meaningful scientific and personal goals, create actionable plans, and grow as both scientists and people.
We welcome curiosity, bold ideas, and new ways of approaching difficult problems. We ask questions, think critically, learn broadly, and challenge assumptions. Everyone is encouraged to share ideas, take thoughtful risks, and explore beyond familiar approaches.
